YOUR LAB-GROWN DIAMOND QUESTIONS ANSWERED
From natural seeds to tangible brilliance, here’s what you’re dying to know about our lab-grown diamonds.
What are lab-grown diamonds?
Experience the wonders of lab-grown diamonds, cultivated in laboratories using small natural seeds instead of being mined from the earth. Two methods are used to grow rough diamonds that result in a stone with the same qualities as a natural, mined diamond. The only difference is price.
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Absolutely! Lab-grown diamonds are physically, chemically, and optically identical to mined diamonds, validated by the Federal Trade Commission. The only difference lies in their creation process.
Can you tell the difference between lab-grown diamonds and mined diamonds?
Distinguishing lab-grown diamonds from mined diamonds requires specialised equipment in the hands of trained gemmologists. The similarities are so remarkable that even experienced jewellers using x10 magnification cannot differentiate them.
Does labgrowndiamonds.nz offer certificates and grading reports as they would for mined diamonds?
Every diamond comes with an independent certification and grading report from a renowned institution like the International Gemological Institute (IGI) in Antwerp, Begium; the Gemological Institute of America (GIA); and HRD Antwerp.
Are lab-grown diamonds graded according to the 4Cs?
Yes, lab-grown diamonds undergo the same grading process as mined diamonds, following the criteria established by renowned laboratories. Our curated selection meets strict standards, ensuring you access only the finest lab-grown diamonds.
How are Lab-grown diamonds made?
Lab-grown diamonds are meticulously cultivated in advanced laboratories. A diamond seed is placed in a controlled environment and subjected to extreme heat, pressure, and carbon gases, replicating the natural diamond-forming process. Skilled diamond cutters then transform the resulting rough diamonds into exquisite gems.
Are lab-grown diamonds perfect?
Similar to mined diamonds, no two lab-grown diamonds are the same. Unless you choose an internally flawless diamond, some inclusions may be present. However, their position is crucial. For example, we advise against purchasing an emerald-cut diamond with an inclusion in its table.
Are lab-grown diamonds the same as cubic zirconia (CZ)?
No, lab-grown diamonds are distinct from cubic zirconia (CZ). While CZ may resemble diamonds, they are not carbon-based gems, and lab-grown diamonds exhibit the scintillation, fire, and sparkle that set them apart. Additionally, CZ tend to appear ‘milky’ in comparison and lack the durability of a diamond, as they are not as hard.
Are lab-grown diamonds the same as moissanite?
No, lab-grown diamonds and moissanite are different gemstones. Moissanite is made from a lattice of silicon and carbon, while diamonds consist of a carbon-only lattice. Moissanite’s doubly refractive nature and milky appearance differentiate it from a diamond’s singular refractivity and pristine appearance.
What is better: CVD or HPHT diamonds?
There is no discernible visual difference between CVD and HPHT diamonds. Both methods produce stunning, optically flawless diamonds that are chemically and physically identical to natural diamonds.
