WHAT EXACTLY IS A CARAT?

Not to be confused with the purity of precious metals, a carat is a unit of weight used for diamonds and other precious stones. Traditionally, the weight of a carat varied because each diamond capital used different seeds or grains to establish the weight of their carat. Dutch jewellers considered the carat to be equal to 0.2057 grams, while Italian gem traders defined it as 0.1972 grams.

The 'metric' carat weight was standardised in 1913 (USA) and 1914 (UK), and today, each carat is equal to 200 milligrams or 0.2 grams.
